Wow, it's music next!
If you haven't yet seen Anne Bamford and Paul Glinkowski's impact evaluation of the wider opportunities programme then I heartily recommend that you read it (at least the summary!). Entitled 'Wow, it's music next' it describes the programme as 'generally of a high international standard', and as receiving ' widespread support form pupils, parents. headteachers and local authorities'.
In detailing the impact of the programme on children, schools and teachers it quotes increased motivation and self-confidence, pride and achievement, more supportive learning environments and music being more valued in the school amongst many other things.
The full report runs to an extensive 137 pages but the shorter executive summary gives an exciting picture of committed teachers and instrumental specialists having a real impact on the lives of children across the country and should, in my opinion, be essential reading.
Perhaps one of the most powerful comments comes from a headteacher who said 'We have issues with some children opting out of some lessons, but if you say,'it's music next', it readily engages them. They are straight in there.'
