Sound it Out - New Horizons training programme
New Horizons is a free training programme which will benefit any proficient musician with a desire to teach children and young people in schools and privately.
Devised by Sound It Out in 2000, New Horizons was initially developed in partnership with Birmingham Music Service to enable competent musicians to develop the skills and knowledge needed to teach instruments and voice. Due to demand for places, the course has since been delivered in partnership with other regional Music Services.
Sound It Out is currently delivering this course 3 times a year. We are NOW RECRUITING for the Birmingham based course starting in October.
The course includes:
· Training sessions held on a fortnightly basis over a period of 4 months (mainly evenings and weekends from October – February).
· Participatory workshop sessions to practise teaching techniques with other course members.
· A chance to observe peripatetic teachers working in schools in the West Midlands.
· Advice and guidance relating to self employment, contracts, public liability, child protection, self promotion, marketing etc.
· A session at the end of the course where you are given feedback on your teaching skills.
· An individual debrief on relevant contacts for further opportunities and professional development.
· The opportunity to run a taster workshop in a school.
A high level of performance skills and general musicianship is required for this course. It is essential that all trainees have a detailed knowledge of good technique in relation to their instrument(s).
Some priority will be given to shortage areas identified by the music services. Currently there are shortages within the fields of World and Contemporary music including Gospel style vocals and acoustic/electric guitar.
The closing date for completed applications is 24th September 2010.
