NAME NEW BOOK:  Musical Pathways

Edited by Chris Harrison & Lis McCullough

This book provides a fascinating insight into the many and varied pathways followed by a wide range of musicians and educators.  It shows there is no single route to musical achievement or enjoyment, and emphasises the importance of keeping open as many pathways as possible.  The stories it contains make for fascinating and absorbing reading and will provide inspiration for anyone following their own musical pathway or giving guidance to others.   To order a copy click here.

NAME produces a wide range of publications.  Overall they provide materials which inform, support, guide and challenge the work of all working in music education. We do not publish classroom resources , as these are already produced in sufficient quantity by commercial publishers.  Our publications include:

  • Books
  • Information Bulletins
  • NAME Magazine
  • Postbag
  • Occasional Papers

A book, often linked to the theme of the Annual Conference, is published each year, often linked to the theme of the Annual Conference. These books focus on relevant and current issues, linking practice to research and discussion, and draw on the expertise of a wide range of contributors, including NAME members. Topics include singing, composing, ICT, assessment, transition between phases of education, special needs, inclusive approaches to teaching music, partnership, and musical development.

One Information Bulletin is published each year in order to provide information on a relevant current issue.

Three issues of the NAME Magazine are produced each year, one of which serves as the Annual Conference report. These journals provide a very wide range of authoritative articles on the work of members and other key figures in music education, in such areas as working with artists, classroom curriculum practice, research findings, current projects and initiatives, instrumental teaching, and many others.

Postbag is produced online four times a year to give the latest detailed information on all current matters.

Occasional Papers. This format is sometimes used to provide more detailed information and guidance on significant current issues. The first addresses the implications of PPA for music and more will be published if they are needed.

Musical Pathways 2011

NAME publications

  • What are our first musical experiences?  How do we build on our early experiences?  What factors help us to sustain a meaningful engagement in music?  What musical pathways are available for young people today?  These are all important questions that music educators need to engage with if we are to provide effective support for the musical development of those with whom we work.

  • Involving students as stakeholders in their own education has been shown to have significant benefits in terms of motivation and achievement. This new book, written by leading experts and practitioners in the field, looks at ways in which students can play an active role in shaping their own music education.

  • Recent discussions about the curriculum have highlighted the need for greater flexibility and cross-curricular links. This bulletin provides an important overview of how learning in music can both support and be enhanced by links with other subjects. It outlines a range of different ideas for locating music within general cross-curricular themes and making specific links between music and other subjects. Advice is given on how to begin the process of developing cross-curricular work, with examples of some successful projects.
