Muslim Music and Culture in the Curriculum
Written by Robert Bunting, this booklet was originally published by Birmingham Advisory and Support Service in 2006 and we are pleased to have a limited number of copies so that it can be made available to a wider audience. It offers information, guidance and practical advice on Muslim music and culture in the context of educational values in the UK and music in the National Curriculum.
Robert Bunting, formerly Music Adviser for Birmingham, has a national reputation for his expertise in this area and this book grew out of extensive discussions with teachers, pupils and Muslim educators in Muslim faith schools and local authority maintained schools, supported by a wide range of listening and reading. It represents a dialogue between the educational values and musical cultures of the UK and the Muslim communities within it; a celebration of the riches of Muslim music and culture; and an exploration of how each can enrich the other.
The principal audience for this publication is school teachers and managers, and the parents of their pupils - in schools with significant numbers of Muslim pupils or with few or none. It will also be of interest to music services, teacher trainers, and community musicians and artists working in schools.
