Whose Music Education Is It? - the role of the student voice
Involving students as stakeholders in their own education has been shown to have significant benefits in terms of motivation and achievement. This new book, written by leading experts and practitioners in the field, looks at ways in which students can play an active role in shaping their own music education.
The book begins by outlining what is meant by 'student voice' both in general terms and in relation to music education. This is followed by three sections providing examples of different strategies for student involvement - consultation processes wherby students have a voice in shaping the curriculum; student-led research projects; and the involvement of students as mentors to their peers. A final section covers a number of other perspectives, including on-line social networking, the use of assistive music technology, and strategies for enabling students to contribute their ideas effectively.
This is a pioneering book, offering an insight into strategies which can fundamentally change the nature and effectiveness of music education. It is essential reading for all practitioners.
